Project Description

Ian is Deputy Vice Chancellor: Systems and Operations, at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. Previously he served as Dean: Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, from 2014 to July 2021. He is also a Personal Professor in the School of Electrical and Information Engineering at Wits and was Head of that School from 2001 to 2011.

At Wits Ian is joint leader of the High Voltage and the Lightning/EMC Research Group. He has an NRF C-rating as a researcher and is the author or co-author of more than 100 papers in the areas of High Voltage Engineering, Earthing and Lightning Protection and Industrial EMC.

He is registered as an International Professional Engineer on the International Register of Professional Engineers (IntPE(SA)) of the International Professional Engineers Agreement (IPEA), and is a registered Professional Engineer (PrEng) in South Africa. He is regular consultant to industry in the areas of forensic engineering, earthing and lightning protection and industrial EMC.
